Forum examines AIDS and minority groups

LARGO -- The Florida HIV/AIDS Minority Network is sponsoring a community forum from noon to 3 p.m. today at the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension Service, 12175 125th St. N, Largo. The purpose is to explore the disparities in HIV/AIDS rates within the community and discuss solutions. The program is one of 10 in Florida this year. Tom Liberti, head of the Bureau of HIV/AIDS of the Florida Department of Health, said there are about 4,000 new HIV infections each year in Florida. One of the goals of the bureau, he said, is to reduce that number to 2,000 by the 2005.

50 people evacuated because of fire

CLEARWATER -- A fire forced the evacuation of about 50 people from a business Thursday. The 4 p.m. fire at Short Block Technologies, 1401 Myrtle Ave. N, started on a piece of equipment that exploded, said Clearwater Assistant Chief Charlie Flowers. Firefighters had to use a dry chemical to put out the fire, which was contained to the equipment and caused no other damage to the business, Flowers said.

No one was injured, but employees were sent home early from the business, which Flowers said rebuilds small engines. A cause had not been determined Thursday afternoon. The fire was under investigation.
