UF's Brown set to play

GAINESVILLE -- Defensive end Alex Brown will not have any conflicts concerning Saturday's game against Mississippi State.

Brown's girlfriend, who had an emergency earlier in the week that caused the senior to miss practice Monday, delivered their first child Thursday morning.

"Alex was out here, had a baby boy today," coach Steve Spurrier said. "Almost five pounds, I think."

Brown had said the baby was due in early November but might be born this week, even Saturday.

Spurrier said cornerback Lito Sheppard, who suffered a pulled groin against Kentucky, was scheduled to play.

DEGORY HAS SURGERY: Center Mike Degory had surgery to remove a congenital bone spur from his right foot. The freshman is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

OUT FOR NATIONAL ANTHEM: Spurrier said both teams would be present on the field for the national anthem and God Bless America before kickoff.

The Gators were on the field Saturday for a special tribute at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, Ky.

Florida will be selling T-shirts with an American flag and the phrase "Through all kinds of weather, we all stick together." The proceeds will go to disaster relief funds.

FSU's Woods quits team

TALLAHASSEE -- Junior defensive tackle Chris Woods, who has been bothered with chronic ankle injuries, decided to quit, coach Bobby Bowden said. Woods, from Orlando, was trying to return from three operations on both ankles, but no longer could endure the pain. Personal issues also influenced his decision.

NEW STARTS: Sophomore Rufus Brown will replace Malcolm Tatum as the starting cornerback, defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews said. Tatum has a fractured right hand and is not expected to play against Wake Forest. Sophomore Charles Howard, hampered with a strained right hamstring, will start at defensive end.

INJURY REPORT: Linebacker Jerel Hudson (burner) is probable. Defensive end O.J. Jackson (groin, knee) and safety Patrick Newtown (hip pointer) are questionable. Cornerback Malcolm Tatum (hand) and defensive tackle Travis Johnson (ankle) are doubtful. Wide receivers Robert Morgan (torn ACL), Anquan Boldin (torn ACL) and (broken fibula), running back Davy Ford (torn ACL), center David Castillo (hand), guard Otis Duhart (knee), fullback Randy Golightly (torn Achilles' tendon), defensive end Eric Powell (gunshot wound), defensive end, Willie Jones (knee) and cornerback Leroy Smith (knee) are out.

Bulls prepare for home opener

TAMPA -- South Florida worked out in full padsand coach Jim Leavitt said it was business as usual preparing for Saturday's home opener against North Texas.

It will be the Bulls' first game in Raymond James Stadium in 313 days.

Receiver DeAndrew Rubin, who saw limited action against Memphis because of turf toe and has been slowed this week by the flu, practiced. But Leavitt said he still is not sure about Rubin's status.

"Rubin is not full-go," he said. "I don't know if he's questionable. He's somewhere between questionable and probable. Probable, I'd say."

Receiver Ryan Hearn, who bruised his shoulder Wednesday, returned to practice. X-rays taken Wednesday were negative, but the junior's availability is in doubt.
