Marion Jones resumed her five-gold-medal quest Thursday. The highlights:
MARION JONES: The 100-meter champion added the 200 title in 21.84 seconds, winning by almost a half-second. Her victory margin of .43 was the biggest since American Wilma Rudolph won by .45 at the 1960 Rome Games. The American competes in the long jump final today. "I don't think anybody doubted me in the sprints," she said. "But my real test will come (today). I'm going to have to dig down deep. And I'm ready for that." Cathy Freeman, winner of the 400 gold medal, was seventh.
ALSO NOTABLE: The U.S. 400 relay team, which Jones will anchor if it reaches the final, advanced to the semis, but it lost two of its fastest runners when Gail Devers and Inger Miller withdrew because of injuries. A team of Chryste Gaines, Torri Edwards, Nanceen Perry and Passion Richardson won its heat, but Jamaica and the Bahamas were faster. ... Belarus' Yanina Karolchik took the shot put with a throw of 67 feet, 51/2 inches. ... American Marla Runyan, the first U.S. Paralympian to reach the Olympics, made it to the 1,500 final. Teammate Suzy Favor Hamilton also qualified. ... The only American in the javelin, Lynda Blutreich, failed to qualify for the final.
