Vengeance on track

Brooksville's John Capel, a one-time Florida Gator, vowed that he won't step on a football field again until he wins every 200-meter race between now and the 2004 Games. "It's going to be track and field until I beat every guy in that field," he said. Capel, among the favorites, started poorly after what he believed was a false start and finished last in the final. Marion Jones had better luck in her 200, winning her second gold.

Norway? Yes way!

Longtime nemesis Norway beat America's defending World Cup women's soccer champions 3-2 in overtime for the gold medal. Substitute Dagny Mellgren scored in the 12th minute of sudden death. Norway is the only nation with an all-time winning record (15-13-2) against the Americans.

Williams Invitational

Venus Williams added to her singles gold by teaming with sister Serena for the doubles title. They dominated, beating the Dutch team of Kristie Boogert and Miriam Oremans in the final 6-1, 6-1. "To have a victory like this with Serena, my sister and best friend, doesn't happen very often," Venus said.

Off-beat

Star-spangled siblings

The Williams sisters are the second sisters and third siblings to represent the United States in tennis. Georgina and Marion Jones competed in the 1900 Paris Games. Brothers Arthur and Joseph Wear, who competed in St. Louis in 1904, are the great uncles of former President Bush.

What time is it?

Sydney is 15 hours ahead of Tampa Bay, so as most people read their morning paper, today's events are wrapping up in Australia. We have converted schedules and other references to Tampa Bay time. For the latest results, check the Times Web site at http://www.sptimes.com/olympics.

While you were sleeping

Some of the events completed after deadline for today's paper: semifinals in men's and women's basketball; the men's soccer gold medal match between Spain and Cameroon; and several track finals, including Marion Jones' bid in the long jump and Hicham El Guerrouj's run for the 1,500-meter title.
