Memorializing Claiborne

Former Maryland coach Jerry Claiborne, who died this week, was memorialized by a moment of silence before the game. Claiborne was 77-37-3 and had seven of the program's 17 bowl berths during his 10 years (1972-81).

Sideline reunion

Ex-Seminoles Peter Boulware (Baltimore Ravens), Corey Simon and Tra Thomas (Philadelphia Eagles) made the short commute to College Park, Md., to see FSU play. It was especially poignant for Boulware, whose little brother Michael is a freshman linebacker.

Homecoming honor

Although not a captain, FSU senior linebacker Tommy Polley, a Baltimore native, joined quarterback Chris Weinke, linebacker Brian Allen and linebacker/special teams standout Jean Jeune for the coin toss.

Happy birthday

Byrd Stadium, home of the Maryland Terrapins, celebrates its 50th birthday Saturday. It was built at a cost of $1-million. The Terrapins are 152-98-1 in the stadium.

Quotable

"It's been so long since we've been an underdog, so we get used to having to do it. You got to do it. If you don't, you get yourself whipped ... I depend on pride; pride out of the players, that they've got enough pride to go up there and not let somebody beat them.''

- FSU coach Bobby Bowden on getting his team up for a game when it's a prohibitive favorite.
