Hicham El Guerrouj had not lost a 1,500-meter race since 1997 -- until Friday. The highlights:
HICHAM EL GUERROUJ: The Moroccan runner who fell at the 1996 1,500 final was upset by Kenya's Noah Ngeny, who ran an Olympic-record 3:32.07. El Guerrouj, the world record-holder, took the lead with 21/2 laps to go. Ngeny made his move on the final turn, catching him only a few meters from the finish. El Guerrouj won the silver.
POLE VAULT: American Nick Hysong won with 19 feet, 41/4 inches. He is the first American to win the event since 1968. Teammate Lawrence Johnson was second.
RELAYS: Maurice Greene and his teammates on the U.S. 4x100-meter squad posted the fastest semifinal time of 37.82 seconds. In the 4x400, a U.S. squad including twin brothers Alvin and Calvin Harrison won their semifinal in 2 minutes, 58.78 seconds.
ALSO NOTABLE: Poland's Robert Korzeniowski won the 50-kilometer walk, becoming the first to sweep both walking events. ... In the steeplechase, Reuben Kosgei led a 1-2 finish by Kenyans by winning the gold in 8 minutes, 21.43 seconds.
