East Bay 21, Durant 19

GIBSONTON -- In a game with many mistakes by both teams, East Bay took an early lead and held on for a win over Durant.

The Cougars fumbled on the opening kickoff and on their first series, allowing East Bay to go ahead 14-0 in the first five minutes. They turned over the ball four times on six fumbles, plus had one interception.

The Indians lost three of four fumbles early or the game could well have included at least another two scores. East Bay had a touchdown called back because of a holding penalty.

PLAY OF THE GAME: After sitting on the bench most of the night nursing a sprained ankle, senior quarterback Bruce Youmans seemingly put the game away with a late 72-yard touchdown. His speed left Durant defenders a good 10 yards behind when he crossed the goal line.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: East Bay senior defensive back Gary Bell recovered three fumbles, helping kill Durant drives.

KEY STATISTIC: Even with 60 yards in penalties and all the turnovers, the Cougars' running attack accumulated 145 yards. Plus, Jason Reider passed for 114.

THEY SAID IT: "Both teams made a lot of mistakes, and fortunately they made their's early and we were able to take advantage of them and hold on. We needed a win bad. We will have to work on our kicking game." -- East Bay coach Brian Thornton.
