Warhawks need rally to beat Gladiators

SEMINOLE -- Once again, the Warhawks defense saved the day.

But not in its usual fashion.

Facing a Gibbs team led by a third-string quarterback, Seminole spent much of the first three quarters behind, but two key interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown -- made the difference in a 37-26 win between two unbeaten teams.

Deangelo Woody, starting in place of the injured Ron Mathis, swiftly guided the Gladiators with 254 yards passing and four touchdowns to put Gibbs up 26-18.

But in the fourth quarter an ill-advised pass was picked off by Joey Fabrizio in Gladiators territory.

And five plays later, Seminole quarterback D'Qwell Jackson punched in a 2-yard keeper to put the Warhawks up 30-26 with 7:52 remaining.

Clearwater take out Tarpon Springs 31-12

CLEARWATER -- Tarpon Springs quarterback Achilleas Houllis stood on his own 15-yard line, head down as teammate Corey Burrowes raced toward the end zone for an apparent third-quarter touchdown. Two penalty flags lay on the ground to Houllis' left.

The play was coming back, and he knew it.

What he didn't know was that things were only going to get worse.

The Spongers' undefeated season came to an emphatic end as Clearwater controlled both sides of the ball in a 31-12 rout.

The Tornadoes (1-4) outrushed Tarpon Springs 272 to minus-20.

The Spongers (4-1) didn't get a first down in the second half, and the usually lethal Houllis completed only 3 of 15 passes.

"If we were going to win, we had to control the ball," Clearwater coach Tom Bostic said. "Our defense played very well, and our running game was working."

Packers cruise past Green Devils 38-0

LARGO -- They don't wear blue and gold for nothing. Largo's offensive line painted black and blue all over the St. Petersburg defense, and offensive coordinator Bob Hagen's game plan was as good as gold in the Packers' 38-0 bruising of the visiting Green Devils.

"We devise a game plan each week," coach Rick Rodriguez said. "And (Hagen) does a hell of a job with the play-calling."

Devon Goodloe got most of those calls. The senior tailback had 23 carries for 78 yards, hitting wide-open corners and huge holes created by an overpowering line.
