Small player keys big half for Jesuit

TAMPA -- Tampa Jesuit's smallest player gave St. Petersburg Catholic the largest headache.

Running back Johnathan Giles scored four touchdowns and rushed for 185 yards -- both career highs -- as the Tigers (3-2) used a 28-point, second-quarter explosion to post a 35-6 victory Friday night.

Giles, a 5-foot-6, 140-pound senior who racked up his yardage on only 17 carries, benefited from a big Jesuit offensive line that helped produce 308 yards rushing against the Barons (3-2).

Giles scored on runs of 73, 17 and 36 yards, and also caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Severino.

The effort by Giles almost made Jesuit fans forget that leading rusher Aaron Fryer is still sidelined by a knee injury. Jesuit coach Dominick Ciao said he hopes to regain Fryer's services after next week's bye.

"We have a lot of injuries on our team, and as a team, we just have to come together," Giles said. "The offensive line has been doing a great job and those guys just come out and work harder and harder."

St. Petersburg Catholic also felt the sting of Jesuit's defense.

The Barons' average starting field position on nine drives was their own 18-yard line as they were limited to 209 total yards.

All but 48 yards came on St. Petersburg Catholic's first and last possessions of the game.

The Barons avoided the shutout with a 95-yard scoring drive, capped by Adam Gorman's 8-yard touchdown run with 3:29 remaining.

"Our defense knew that No. 9 (St. Petersburg Catholic quarterback Chris Davis) was a great player, but we kind of corralled and fenced him in," Ciao said. "On offense, we were able to control the ball."

St. Petersburg Catholic coach Dan Mancuso said his team had trouble with Jesuit's size on the lines.

"We've got young, small lines and Jesuit was too much for us," Mancuso said. "When we were behind, it was hard to play catch-up."
