FSU basketball player is charged with rape

Florida State basketball player Rodney Tucker was charged Friday with raping a 19-year-old woman at his apartment.

Tucker, 19, of Stone Mountain, Ga., was in the Leon County jail without bond. According to court records, Tucker told police he had consensual sex with the woman.

Coach Steve Robinson suspended Tucker, who averaged 2.1 points last season as a freshman. "His future with our program will be determined once we have more facts, but we will be guided by our policies," Robinson said.

COLLEGES: A lawyer plans to file a lawsuit trying to get Bob Knight's firing overturned. Gojko Kasich claims that Indiana University president Myles Brand circumvented a state Open Door Law by meeting with two groups of four school trustees before deciding to dismiss the Hall of Fame basketball coach Sept. 10, saying he violated a "zero-tolerance" behavior policy. ... Olympic decathlon bronze medalist Chris Huffins is Georgia Tech's newest assistant coach for men and women's track and field. Athletic director Dave Braine said Huffins will work with students in weight events, in pole vault and in men's short distance sprinting. ... The NCAA has sent a check for $370,225 to Kansas state Treasurer Tim Shallenburger for unclaimed property the association holds, but he contends the amount owed is almost $700,000. The money is from the sale of Final Four basketball tournament tickets. ... Nebraska swimming coach Cal Bentz and assistants Keith Moore, Kelly Nordell and Rick Paine were suspended pending an investigation of possible NCAA violations. Bentz has coached Nebraska for 25 years. Fifth-year assistant Paul Nelson was made interim coach. ... Navy Petty Officer Arnold Eaton was sentenced to about eight years in prison for causing the death of Tiffany Young, 21, a member of Purdue's 1999 NCAA women's championship team.The FSU men's tennis team got 10 victories at the Southern Intercollegiate. First-round winners included Rodrigo Laub, Jarrod Owen, Reid McCree and Joe Bassett. Chad Mooney lost. Second-round winners included Owen, Bassett, Xavier Luscan, Romain Jurd, Alex Herra and Jeff Scarella. Rodrigo Laub and Reid McCree lost. Florida's soccer team opened Southeastern Conference play with a 3-0 win over visiting Tennessee. Juniors Karyn Hall, Abby Wambach and Andi Sellers scored. The South Florida men's soccer team fell to visiting Memphis 3-2 in overtime in the Reebok-Baymont Inn & Suites Classic. Greg Krauss of Clearwater opened the scoring off an assist by Dave Ambush of St. Petersburg. Jason Cudjoe also scored. Memphis tied it in the 67th minute. The FSU women's volleyball team defeated North Carolina State. Junior Norisha Campbell led FSU with 20 kills and seven blocks.

BASKETBALL: The third suspect in the stabbing of Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics was arrested a day after Pierce was released from the hospital. William Ragland, 28, was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail after pleading innocent to charges of assault and battery. Tony Hurston, 31, and Trevor Watson, 34, had pleaded innocent. ... Chuck Person, 36, was waived by the Lakers. Known as "The Rifleman," Person came to the Lakers along with Horace Grant, Greg Foster and Emanual Davis from Seattle in a recent four-team, 12-player deal. ... Corliss Williamson joined the Toronto Raptors with the NBA's approval of the trade that sends Doug Christie to the Sacramento Kings. The deal was made Aug. 11, but NBA wanted to review salary-cap ramifications. ... A week after Tim Hardaway agreed to a one-year, $12-million contract, the Heat announced his signing as the NBA's highest-paid point guard. ... The SuperSonics, who depleted their roster when they traded seven players to get Patrick Ewing from the Knicks, signed four free agents: center Ed Stokes, forwards Eddie Elisma and Brandon Williams and guard Tyson Wheeler. ... The Mavericks signed draft picks Etan Thomas, Courtney Alexander, Donnell Harvey and Eduardo Najera to multiyear contracts. Under terms of the rookie salary scale, Thomas' contract is worth about $3.73-million, Alexanders' $3.55-million and Harvey's $2.32-million. Terms for Najera weren't disclosed. ...The Cavaliers signed swingman Willie Burton, guards Khalid Reeves and Johnny Hemsley and center Robert Werdan.

AUTO RALLY: Gilles Panizzi took a first-day lead at the Tour of Corsica, driving a Peugeot 206 WRC six seconds ahead of teammate Francois Delecour. GOLF: The University of Washington will stage the four-day NCAA women's championship tournament in late May 2002.

HORSES: Tiznow, second in the Pacific Classic, is the 6-5 favorite over Belmont Stakes winner Commendable in today's Super Derby at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City. Six 3-year-old colts will race for $500,000. ... Full Retail beat favored Pooska Hill in the $49,000 allowance feature at Belmont Park, N.Y. Critical Eye won the $200,000 Honey Bee Handicap at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

TENNIS: Anna Kournikova beat defending champion Kim Clijsters to advance to today's semifinals of the Seat Open in Luxembourg. Kournikova faces Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva, who beat Patty Schnyder. Jennifer Capriati also advanced, beating Anne-Gaelle Sidot. Barbara Rittner beat Daniela Hantuchova. ... Brothers Christophe and Oliver Rochus play each other in today's semifinals of the $375,000 ATP clay-court tournament in Palermo, Sicily. Diego Nargiso faces Sergi Bruguera.

SOCCER: The host Kansas City Wizards and Los Angeles Galaxy played to a scoreless tie, giving each team one point in the MLS semifinal series. Game 2 is Tuesday at the Rose Bowl. The first to gain five points wins the series.
