Sheriff Richard Nugent's first "Beat the Heat in the Street" event was a big draw on Aug. 4 in front of Hungry Howie's Pizza & Subs on Kass Circle in Spring Hill. Deputies from the COPPS (community policing) unit organized the event to give our community's young people an opportunity to spend some informal time with law enforcement officers.

Local businesses and civic organizations sponsored the exhibits, food, prizes and activities. The entertainment was provided courtesy of Gemini, a dance band with an antidrug/antialcohol message.

Nugent spent a lot of time in the dunk tank, as did Lt. Mike Owens, deputy coordinator Jim Powers and COPPS Deputy Brian McGinnis, but they all agreed it was for a good cause. Other COPPS unit deputies were seen trying to outshoot a group of young people on the basketball court while the Explorers were supervising the moon walk and obstacle course.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the many people who made "Beat the Heat in the Street" possible, including: Oak Hill Hospital, Wal-Mart SuperCenter, Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative, Spring Hill Fire Rescue, SunTrust Bank/Nature Coast, Palmwood Homes, Paul Rosser and Masonic Lodge 97 of Brooksville, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 164, Nature Coast Dodge, Outback Steakhouse, Sir Speedy, Joni Industries and Tim Devine's Hungry Howie's Pizza and Subs.

We truly could not have done it without their generous help. Thanks also to the friends, neighbors and families who came out to enjoy the day. It was good to see you, and we appreciate your support.
-- Deanna Dammer, Community relations coordinator, Hernando County Sheriff's Office
