TAMPA -- With three major meets during the past 10 days, plenty of North of Tampa-area cross country runners had strong performances. But none was stronger than Sickles' Adam Sisler. The Gryphons' senior runner was first in individual standings at the Millard Schumate Invitational Sept. 25 at Picnic Island, helping his team to a second-place finish.

The Bloomingdale boys won the team title. Gaither's boys were seventh but their female counterparts fared much better, taking the team title. Amanda Wells completed the 3-mile course in 19:59, placing her second among individuals but giving the Cowboys enough points to post a 64-70 edge against second-place Riverview. The Sickles girls placed sixth.

At the Wharton Invitational, the host boys placed second despite two runners in the top 10, while fifth-place Chamberlain was led by second-place Nathan Adams with a time of 16:09. On the girls' side, Leto placed second behind winner Tampa Bay Tech. The host Wildcats placed fourth while Chamberlain was sixth. Jen Rodriguez led the way for the Falcons, placing fourth at 20:13.

At the USF Invitational on Sept. 22 at the USF Golf Course, Leto placed eighth among 17 teams after Coe Federenko placed eighth among individuals with a 16:28 finish. Miami's Gulliver Prep captured the boys title while Plant won the girls race.

Alonso, Gaither and Chamberlain will run at the Jesuit Invitational Tuesday (Oct. 2) and Leto, Sickles and Gaither will run at the W.D. Johnson Invitational Oct. 13 at East Bay High School.

GOLF: The Wharton boys squad bounced back from its first loss of the season by defeating Bloomingdale 152-171 on Sept. 26 at Pebble Creek Golf Course.

The Wildcats, now 10-1, continue to get solid play from Brian Wertz and Mike Giammaresi, who posted scores of 36 and 40, respectively, against the Bulls. While the Wildcats have cruised through most of the season, they should get at least one more challenge before the post-season tees off Oct. 22.

The Wildcats will face two of the other county powers, Jesuit and Berkeley Prep, Oct. 10 at Tampa Palms. Wharton has beaten both of those squads in head-to-head matchups earlier this season.

In other boys action, first-year Alonso evened its mark to 5-5 after beating Jefferson and Blake 175-180-201 in a tri-match Sept. 24 at Rocky Point Golf Course.

T.C. Seibert, meanwhile, fired a 36 to lead Gaither to a 158-164 win against Sickles. The Cowboys improved to 8-2 while the Gryphons are 7-3.

Sickles' Megan Bursey has continued her strong play, which has placed her among the top girl golfers in the area.

In the Gryphons' 214-220 win against Brandon, Bursey fired a nine-hole score of 37 on Sept. 24 at Heritage Harbor. Two days later, she shot a 36 as the Gryphons were defeated 196-212 by Gaither at the same course.

The Gryphons are 8-6 on the season while the victory improved Gaither to 11-1.
