Two programs honor Domestic Violence Awareness Month with speakers, artwork and information booths.

Penny Morrill is worried that the recent terrorist attacks around the country will lead to violence in Pasco County homes -- domestic violence.

"My concern is the stress of national issues is going to make domestic violence more prevalent," said Morrill, the chief executive officer of Sunrise of Pasco, the county's east side domestic violence program. "It can be the triggering factor for someone who is already having an issue with power and control."

People may be stressed by the slowing economy or the uncertainty of the times, she said.

In that sense, the timing couldn't be better for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Morrill said. Each October domestic violence advocates across the country seek to bring attention to their issue.

"We want people to get involved, be aware and make a difference," said Michele Anderson, the manager of west Pasco's Salvation Army Domestic Violence Program and shelter.

This year's theme is "Domestic Violence, it is your business."

The county's two programs will use guest speakers, candles, artwork and purple ribbons to raise awareness.

In east Pasco, Sunrise will kick off the month's activities with a unity celebration at the historic courthouse in Dade City, Morrill said. State Rep. Ken Littlefield, R-Dade City, and Sheriff Bob White will speak at the event at noon Monday.

On Oct. 17 at 4 p.m., Sunrise will hold the county domestic violence task force meeting at its offices on State Road 52.

On Oct. 18 at 6 p.m., it will host the annual candlelight vigil, during which victims speak. The event on the front lawn of East Pasco Medical Center will feature segments in Spanish and will be broadcast on WDCF-AM 1530.

On Oct. 26 at 5 p.m., the shelter's thrift store on State Road 52 will host a fashion show featuring clothes from the store. Donations of food and baby care items for people in the shelter will be collected.

During the first week of October, paintings by Melody Stevens, a Land O'Lakes artist and domestic violence survivor, will be displayed in the East Pasco Government Center. The Clothesline Project, a collection of more than 300 T-shirts designed by domestic violence victims, will also be shown.

Some of the proceeds from the Battle of Brilliance bike race on Oct. 14 in Dade City will be donated to Sunrise, Morrill said.

The month is an effort to dispel "the attitude that what goes on behind closed doors is family business," she said.

Similar events will be held in west Pasco by the Salvation Army.
