Tampa architect dies after being thrown from horse in fox huntBy LINDA GIBSON © St. Petersburg Times, published October 1, 2000 TAMPA -- Jan Abell, an architect who has long helped save historic homes and buildings, died Saturday morning while on a fox hunt near Dade City. She was 55. She had been riding her own horse, which apparently threw her off and then kicked her, said business partner Ken Garcia. Pasco County Fire Rescue got a call for an ambulance at 8:21 a.m. Saturday from the Boar's Head Ranch. Participants in the fox hunt met paramedics near U.S. 98 and Messick Road, then led them into the woods. "She was already in cardiac arrest," said Chief Doug Drape. Her head and abdomen bore what looked like kick marks from a horse, he said. She was taken to Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City and declared dead at 9:30 a.m. "She was one of those few individuals who always stood up for preserving the historic fabric of our community," said former City Council member Scott Paine. "It's a tremendous loss to us."
As an architect and a consultant, Ms. Abell's preservation efforts occasionally helped jump-start the renovation of entire neighborhoods. She also was one of the first to buy and move into a house in Hyde Park 20 years ago, when the neighborhood still was considered distressed. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. - Linda Gibson can be reached at (813) 226-3382 or gibson@sptimes.com. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
