    Free or reduced-cost mammograms offered

    Women 50 or older in Pinellas County may be eligible for free or reduced-cost mammograms from the Pinellas County Health Department. Women who might qualify are those without health insurance, those with low incomes or who are on Medicare.

    Included in the appointments are a clinical breast exam and a free Pap smear test to detect cancer of the cervix in its earliest stages.

    To make an appointment or for information, call the Health Department at 824-6917 or 824-6900. The facility is at 500 Seventh Ave. S, St. Petersburg.

    Blessed Sacrament plans charity golf tournament

    SEMINOLE -- Blessed Sacrament School is sponsoring its 11th annual golf tournament Saturday at the Tides Country Club, 11832 66th Ave. N, Seminole. A four-person "Best Ball Scramble" will start at 8 a.m.

    There will be three divisions: men, women and mixed doubles. Special holes consist of four closest to the pin holes and a long drive contest. There will also be a putting contest.

    A $65 entry fee includes greens fees, golf card and a luncheon. Pick up registration forms at Blessed Sacrament School, 11501 66th Ave. N, Seminole or at the Tides Country Club. Proceeds will benefit the school. For information, call the school, 391-4060.

    Workshops on surviving divorce to begin Thursday

    LARGO -- A free, four-part workshop on "Divorce Survival" at 7 p.m. Thursdays is starting this week at the Largo Community Center, 65 Fourth St. NW. The sponsoring organization is the Marriage and Family Center of Clearwater.

    Sessions and topics are as follows:

    Thursday -- Ann M. Santoro will discuss "The Initial Stages of Divorce," how to prepare for divorce and meet new challenges.

    Oct. 12 -- "Helping Kids Cope with Divorce," by Jeannie C. Willsie. Will include parenting techniques for handling divorce.

    Oct. 19 -- "Life After Divorce," by Robert C. Goodbread, will discuss dating, stepfamilies, co-parenting and how to relate to one's "ex."

    Oct. 26 -- An open forum, "Pulling It All Together," will recap and wrap up the previous discussions.

    Recreation center plans bus trip to Sea World

    SEMINOLE -- Spend the day at Sea World in Orlando with adults from the Seminole Recreation Center on Oct. 19.

    The bus leaves the center at 9 a.m. and returns at 6 p.m. Cost: $44, which includes park admission and bus transportation. Lunch is on your own. Space is limited, so advance registration is necessary. The deadline is Oct. 9. Call the recreation center at 391-8345.

    Personal life history workshop begins Oct. 13

    LARGO -- An eight-week workshop on "Personal Life History Writing" begins Oct. 13 and continues weekly through Dec. 8 at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N, Largo. Participants can attend from 10 a.m. to noon or 1-3 p.m. Pat Corell is the instructor. Cost: $50 for the eight-week session. Register by calling Corell at 725-2889.

    Kids get chance to learn to embroider ornaments

    LARGO -- Children ages 8 and older can learn to embroider a colorful, holiday ornament at a special Oct. 14 workshop at the Fiber Arts Building at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N, Largo. "Stitching the Past to the Present" will be led by Alice Phillips. Parents and other adults guardians are encouraged to attend as participants or observers.

    Fabric, needles and thread will be supplied; children should bring a small pair of sharp scissors; embroidery hoop (4- to 5-inches) optional. There is a $10 non-refundable fee. Class size is limited. Registration deadline is Oct. 7. To sign up, call Phillips in the evening at 343-5300.

    Storytelling concert has a haunting theme

    LARGO -- A storytelling concert and workshop entitled "Hoots, Howls and Haunting Fun" will be led by Karin LilliStarr and Sylvia StoreeBrooke Oct. 21 at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N, Largo. The session will be at 11 a.m. Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for students, ages 8-17. Not recommended for children younger than 8 years old.

    Toastmasters Club plans public speaking workshop

    Speak Easy Toastmasters Club 4698 holds a six-week public speaking workshop beginning at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 9 at Royal King Buffet Restaurant, 7610 49th St. N, Pinellas Park.

    There is a $20 materials fee, and the class will be held on consecutive Mondays. Call 581-9730 or 536-3392 for information or to register.

    You can help a child through Linking Lifetimes

    Adults 30 and older have the opportunity to become a mentor on a one-to-one basis with a child age 11-14 through the Linking Lifetimes program.

    No experience is necessary and training will be provided by Gulf Coast Community care.

    Children come from a singe-parent, low-income home and need the additional activity, attention and support a mentor can provide. For information, call 538-760 for Jane at ext. 3019 or Beverly at ext. 3192.

    Children are in need of volunteer grandparents

    Grandmothers and grandfathers are needed by Gulf Coast Community Care of Pinellas County. Mature adults over the age of 50 are needed to volunteer to spend time with a child who needs the special love and attention only a grandparent can provide. Volunteers are asked to spend two to four hours a week developing a close, loving relationship with one child. For information, call 538-7460 for Jane at ext. 3019 or Beverly at ext. 3192.

    World War II uniforms needed for 'South Pacific'

    LARGO -- Lloyd K. Lewis, director of Eight O'Clock Theatre's upcoming production of South Pacific, is in search of World War II uniforms for costumes for the actors portraying sailors and nurses in the musical. The community theater group would like to borrow the uniforms and would have them professionally cleaned before returning them. Donors will be recognized in the production's playbill.
