There are plenty of opinions about how things have shaped up this volleyball season in the new Class 6A-7 district. But some of the more interesting comments may have come from the coach of the team that has become the new power: Durant. In their first season in 6A-7, the defending Class 5A champion Cougars have not lost a district game and have wrapped up the regular season title and district tournament top seed.

Speaking after her team's first loss of the season, 3-1 to Berkeley Prep, Durant coach Teri Ohme offered the following opinions:

On the Class 6A-7 district: "There are some talented athletes in the district, but there also are some teams weaker than others."

On her team's dominance: "We're a pretty solid team. When our kids play well, we can beat anybody."

On the talent level in the district: "Bloomingdale and Gaither have been strong programs traditionally. But they've lost some kids to transfers and graduation. That's a lot of talent to replace."

On Sickles, which finishes as the second-place team in the district: "Sickles has some talent. They always play hard. It'll be interesting to see how the district tournament works out."

Durant will face fourth-seed Bloomingdale when that event tips off October 23. Neighborhood rivals No. 3 Gaither and No. 2 Sickles will square off in the other semifinal match. The Gryphons hold a 2-0 advantage against the Cowboys this season.

But a week before districts begin, area volleyball squads will compete in the Western Conference tournaments. Sickles will host one of the three tournaments Oct. 16-20 featuring Gaither, Chamberlain, Wharton, King and Tampa Bay Tech.

CROSS COUNTRY: Recovered from lingering illnesses that kept him out of the last two races, Dan Doromal returned to running this week, and Sickles immediately benefited. He and teammate Adam Sisler crossed the finish line together at 16:25 to share first place as the Gryphons won the Millard Schumate Invitational at Picnic Island on Thursday. Kalani Dias was the third Gryphon in the top ten, finishing seventh at 17:53.

On the girls' side, Sickles was third behind Jessica Hunter's third-place finish of 21:02.

Wharton, meanwhile, found success at its own invitational, winning both the girls and boys races. Led by Andrew Fulton's second-place time of 16:17, the Wildcats had four of the top 10 runners to outdistance second place Chamberlain by 17 points.

The Chiefs did have the top runner, however, in Nate Adams, who beat Fulton by 18 seconds.

The girls race was tighter as the Wildcats beat King by just nine points. Lisa Brack led Wharton with a fifth-place time of 21:11. Fifth-place Leto was led by Jessica Shepherd's fourth place showing (21:07), while sixth-place Chamberlain was paced by Kayla Strack, who was sixth at 21:13.

GOLF: Chamberlain and Sickles' boys golf programs have played consistently close during the past few seasons. They were separated by three spots at last year's Class 2A-District 8 tournament, by less than 10 strokes earlier this season in a Sickles win and by a two-stroke penalty in a Chamberlain win at a recent dual match.

The teams were at it again Sept. 21 at Babe Zaharias Golf Course when the Gryphons eked out a 153-155 win. Sickles' Brian Primrose and Jason Claridge both fired 37 to pace the field. Matt Eichman shot a 39 and Joe Baker recorded a nine-hole score of 40. Chamberlain was led by Craig Heneveld and Joseph Mills. Each shot 38 while Matt DeLuca shot a 39. Chamberlain (3-4) faces Gaither on Tuesday at Babe Zaharias. Sickles (4-2) plays King at Cheval.
