Judge reconsiders flood grant ruling

MADEIRA BEACH -- The Pinellas-Pasco Circuit judge who in June upheld the city's right to withhold nearly $65,000 in federal flood grant money from former Commissioner Tom Saxon is considering changing his ruling and sending the dispute to trial.

The state Department of Community Affairs previously approved a grant to reimburse Saxon for repair and flood-proofing costs to his home, damaged in 1996. The city, which distributes the grant money, thinks that Saxon as a commissioner was privy to information that gave him an unfair advantage over other grant applicants.

Judge Frank Quesada is expected to make a decision this week.
