* * *

THE PAST WEEK: The Red Sox lost five of seven against the Orioles and Tigers.

SCOUTING REPORT: Once a first-place team, the Red Sox have played so poorly they're in danger of being passed for second place by the Blue Jays. Boston is 6-21 since Aug. 24 and fell below .500 Saturday for the first time since April 5.

ALL-TIME SERIES: The Red Sox have won 13 of 16 vs. the Rays this season, are 6-0 at Tropicana Field and lead the all-time series 32-20.

RED SOX CONNECTIONS: Rolando Arrojo, the Rays' first All-Star, has pitched in just about every role this season and has a 3.48 ERA. First baseman Calvin Pickering attended King High in Tampa and Carl Everett attended Hillsborough High. Rays catcher John Flaherty played 48 games with Boston from 1992-93 and pitcher Tanyon Sturtze is a native of nearby Worcester, Mass.

WHO'S HOT: First baseman Brian Daubach is batting .313 (10-for-32) with 3 doubles, 3 homers and 9 RBI in his past nine games.

WHO'S NOT: AL strikeout leader Hideo Nomo is 0-2 with a 11.57 ERA in his past two starts.
