Performer of the week

Michael Jones

Crystal River football

Dunnellon probably counted on a big night from Nate Madison. And, to be sure, the Tigers probably kept a close eye on quarterback Clayton Trenary and halfback Ryan McNally.

But from the looks of things last Friday night, Dunnellon didn't account for Michael Jones, whose do-everything performance in Crystal River's 35-14 win makes him the Times Performer of the Week.

Jones, a junior starter at wingback and defensive back for the Pirates, rushed for 104 yards on three carries (including runs of 59 and 37 yards), had a 9-yard touchdown reception, intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and made four tackles.

Jones has rushed for 224 yards and three TDs on 12 carries this season.

"He's big," Crystal River coach Jere DeFoor said. "He's played real well, made good tackles, several interceptions (three this season).

"He's a good, steady performer for us. He plays with a lot of emotion and excitement, makes big plays and keeps others playing hard," DeFoor said

Jones has improved his strength and makes his presense felt as a blocker in a wing-T offense. Yet, just as important, he adds another threat that opposing teams have to consider.
