Today, parties will set Nov. 7 stage

The general election is still one month away, but Democrats and Republicans can help set the stage for some local races in the runoff election today. Democrats have two matters on the agenda.

They must decide which candidate, Dick Kaufman or Josh Wooten, will move to the November election for the County Commission District 5 race. They also will select either Lee Cooper or Richard Brady as the party's nominee for tax collector.

Republicans have one question to answer: Which candidate -- Scott Adams or Millie King -- will represent the party in the County Commission District 5 race?

Only Democrats and Republicans vote today. Voters who have registered independent or with a third party are ineligible.

Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Bring a photo ID or be prepared to sign an affidavit attesting to your identity.

Runoff contests are necessary in these races because the top candidates failed to garner 50 percent of the vote plus one in the September primary. Thus, the top two vote getters must square off, with the winner moving on to the Nov. 7 general election.
