Gunfire ends fight, man's life, police sayBy LEANORA MINAI © St. Petersburg Times, published October 3, 2000 ST. PETERSBURG -- A 22-year-old man was shot dead Monday night after an argument with his former roommate, police said. After the shooting at 5965 12th Way N, police escorted the 20-year-old ex-roommate and his mother to police headquarters for questioning, said police spokesman Rick Stelljes. Investigators would not release the name of the victim until his next of kin is notified. They also withheld the names of the ex-roommate and mother. Stelljes said the victim went by the ex-roommate's house Monday night and got into a fight with him. Neighbors Kelly Schwegel, 15, and her friend, Katie Dalton, 13, were talking outside on Kelly Schwegel's patio when they heard what sounded like a firecracker at 7 p.m. Police got a 911 call at 8 p.m. Just before the gunshot, the girls heard glass breaking. "It sounded like a bunch of glass plates slammed against the ground," Dalton said. Detectives were trying to determine what the men were fighting over and whether the ex-roommate's mother witnessed the shooting. The gun was recovered at the scene. The victim, who was shot in the head, was found in a bedroom. Neighbors said they often heard arguing and crashing objects at the house on 12th Way. They said the man who died moved out of the house a week ago. Late Monday, neighbors gathered in the dark along the street and whispered about the shooting. "We saw it coming," said Barbara Pryor, a resident of 12th Way N for nine years. "There was going to be a violent act." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
