© St. Petersburg Times, Memorial service added to weekend Safety FairTREASURE ISLAND -- The fire department has added a memorial service to its annual Safety Fair this weekend. The event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Roselli Park on the Isle of Capri, just north of 116th Avenue. The memorial service will begin at noon and include a brief remembrance for the firefighters and others killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Treasure Island Fire Chief Charlie Fant said local firefighters also will be accepting donations for the families of the victims. Florida Blood Services also will be on hand to accept blood donations. The fair, which also is hosted by the South Pasadena Fire Department and the Treasure Island Volunteer Fire Department, was moved this year to promote the theme, "Strike Out Fire," which is the slogan for national Fire Prevention Week activities. At the Safety Fair, firefighters and volunteers will provide information about fire safety, smoke alarms, proper use of fire extinguishers, emergency medical services, installation of child safety car seats, drowning prevention, bicycle safety, disaster preparedness and boating safety. Displays about the Bayflite helicopter, the county's 911 emergency system and Treasure Island's Community Emergency Response Team will be included in the fair. In addition to its emergency vehicles, Treasure Island also will display its antique fire truck. The Safety Fair also will include members of the Treasure Island Police Department who will hold a bicycle rodeo, free bicycle registrations and host police bicycle and K-9 demonstrations. Children should bring bicycles and helmets to participate in the rodeo. Lunch and snacks will be available at the fair.
