New flag to be presented SaturdayA new 30-foot flagpole and American flag will soon grace the intersection of 49th Street N and Park Boulevard. AAA offers free vehicle inspectionsAAA Auto Club is celebrating National Car Care Month by offering free vehicle maintenance inspections from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the Seminole office, 9200 Seminole Blvd., Seminole. Technicians from AAA approved facilities will inspect lights, fluids, battery, belts, hoses, tires and more for both members and non-members with no obligation to contract services. 'Pastabilities' abound for homeless shelterJohn Morroni, Tracey Edwards, Bernadette Young and a few other local celebrities will serve up some pasta and a little monetary relief to Mid-Pinellas Homeless Outreach Women and Children's Shelter on Oct. 11. "Pasta with Personalities" will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the VFW Hall, 4145 34th St. N, St. Petersburg. Pinellas 911 system rated best in nationThe report card is in and the National Emergency Numbers Association has put Pinellas County at the top of the best large county 911-system class in the country. The county's system processes nearly 530,000 calls a year for fire, police and emergency medical services. On average, help is dispatched within 23 seconds of a call being answered. Residents can exchange mercury thermometersThe St. Petersburg Public Utilities Department, Water Quality Assessment Division, has launched a new program to educate residents about the effects of toxic and hazardous materials. As a part of this program, the city has partnered with several area businesses and agencies to provide a free medical mercury thermometer exchange. Although not harmful when used properly, mercury thermometers contain a highly toxic substance that can pose a human health and environmental threat when broken and disposed of improperly. You can help avoid this contamination by taking your mercury thermometers in either their original case or wrapped in tissue and placed in a plastic bag to one of the following sites (between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.): St. Anthony's Wellness Center, 144 First Ave. S, Suite 100 St. Petersburg Pier (Wednesdays), 800 Second Ave. NE Pinellas County Department of Social Services (Sanderlin Center), 2335 22nd Ave. S Pinellas County Department of Social Services, 647 First Ave. N In exchange, residents will receive a free non-mercury medical thermometer.
