Residents can exchange mercury thermometers

The St. Petersburg Public Utilities Department, Water Quality Assessment Division, has launched a new program to educate residents about the effects of toxic and hazardous materials. As a part of this program, the city has partnered with several area businesses and agencies to provide a free medical mercury thermometer exchange.

Although not harmful when used properly, mercury thermometers contain a highly toxic substance that can pose a human health and environmental threat when broken and disposed of improperly. You can help avoid this contamination by taking your mercury thermometers in either their original case or wrapped in tissue and placed in a plastic bag to one of the following sites (between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.):

St. Anthony's Wellness Center, 144 First Ave. S, Suite 100

St. Petersburg Pier (Wednesdays), 800 Second Ave. NE

Pinellas County Department of Social Services (Sanderlin Center), 2335 22nd Ave. S

Pinellas County Department of Social Services, 647 First Ave. N

In exchange, residents will receive a free non-mercury medical thermometer. Supplies are limited; only one exchange per household. Call 551-3520.
