The pitchers

Ryan Rupe

Rupe (5-11, 6.51) makes his career-high 26th start and is four innings short of his career high of 1421/3 in 1999. Rupe has lost six of his past seven decisions over 15 starts since June 20. He has allowed a club record 28 home runs.

Derek Lowe

Lowe (4-10, 3.57) is making his 66th appearance, second on the team to Rod Beck, and his second start. The right-hander started as Boston's closer but lost his job temporarily, then permanently when the Red Sox traded for Ugueth Urbina.

He said it

"I don't want them to necessarily set goals. I just want them to play like hell every day and let the chips fall where they may."

-- Hal McRae on his plans for the Rays attitude next season.
