Three schools will carry former employees' names

The School Board honors the longtime educators rather than other prominent people.

TAMPA -- Hillsborough School Board members followed a tried-and-true path Tuesday night in naming three new schools.

The final tally: former School Board employees -- 3; everybody else, from Calvin Coolidge to George Steinbrenner -- 0.

The new elementary school in south Brandon will be called Lillian Symmes Elementary. Mrs. Symmes, 95, is a former teacher whose career spanned more than four decades and goes back to local schools on De Soto Road and Gardenville.

"She was one of the original schoolteachers in that area," said Teresa Symmes, Mrs. Symmes' granddaughter by marriage and the person who nominated her. "I just felt that while she's still alive it would be very kind to honor her. But she doesn't think it should be that way. She's very, very modest."

The new elementary school in the VillaRosa development in Lutz will be called Yvonne McKitrick Elementary. During her career, she has served as a teacher, principal, supervisor and School Board member.

Town 'N Country's new high school will be called Braulio Alonso High School in honor of the Hillsborough High graduate who rose through the system and influenced generations of future educators. He was championed by USF President Judy Genshaft and a contingent of leaders from the city's Latin community.

More than 100 residents of the Countryway development signed a petition favoring New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, but the board went with Alonso instead.

A name for the new elementary school in Tampa Palms won't be decided until Nov. 14, after Superintendent Earl Lennard brings a recommendation on whether to split grades between that school and the existing Tampa Palms Elementary.
