U.S. Geological Survey to hold open house

To celebrate Earth Science Week, U.S. Geological Survey hosts an open house from 3-7 p.m. Oct. 10 at their offices, 600 Fourth St. S, St. Petersburg.

Scientists will be present to discuss their research, tours of the buildings will be offered, and there will be many hands-on activities and displays to explore.

Information will be available on native marine life, coral reefs, volcanoes, wetlands and much more.

Toastmasters to host public speaking workshop

Speak Easy Toastmasters Club 4698 will hold a six-week public speaking workshop beginning at 6:15 p.m. Monday at Royal King Buffet Restaurant, 7610 49th St. N, Pinellas Park.

There is a $20 materials fee, and the class will be held on consecutive Mondays.

Pinellas Park to host bike safety rodeo Oct. 14

The Pinellas Park Police Department and Chamber of Commerce will host a Bicycle Safety Rodeo from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 14 at Disston Park, corner of 81st Avenue N and 50th Street. Children are invited to bring their bikes along for a free safety inspection and to take part in an obstacle course designed to prepare them for safe riding everyday. For information, call 541-0866.

Crafters, vendors needed for VA charity craft fair

The third annual Charity Craft Fair at the VA Medical Center and Park at Bay Pines, scheduled for Oct. 14, is looking for a few more vendors. Call 398-9395 for more information and to arrange registration.

Friends of Strays holds Adoptober Fest

Friends of Strays will offer kittens and cats for adoption at a reduced rate during Adoptober Fest, Oct. 3-28.

Free smoke alarms for St. Petersburg residents

In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue units will be installing free smoke alarms from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 7 to city residents. A fire prevention block party will be held from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Fire Headquarters, 400 Dr. M. L. King (Ninth) St. S, St. Petersburg. To sign up to have a smoke detector installed, or for information, call 893-7233.

Third Annual Loop for Lupus is this weekend

Area merchants will join the city of Treasure Island on Saturday and Sunday to host a food and entertainment festival to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America.

The Third Annual Loop for Lupus will begin with a 1- and 3-mile walk on Sunset Beach at the south end of Treasure Island. Other activities, scheduled at various restaurants and bars that make up the "loop" on Sunset Beach, include a classic car show featuring Golden Oldies Car Club and a celebrity autograph session with several Tampa Bay Buccaneers players.

On Sunday, an autograph session with professional wrestlers will be followed by a motorcycle run from the east end of Gandy Bridge to Sunset Beach.

Fife and drum corps seeks new members

Liberty Fife & Drum Corps seeks drummers and fifers to sign up to play historical American music at parades and other local events. They're also looking for marchers to participate in their color guard. Call 360-2677 for information.
