MADEIRA BEACH -- Young cancer patients from Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, New York, North Carolina, Nebraska and Texas are in town this week attending the third annual National Sunshine Kids Fun-n-Sun Celebration.

A total of 28 children, ages 10 to 17, arrived Sunday to spend four days at the Holiday Inn Madeira Beach. The trip is an opportunity for the children to get away from their treatments and hospitals. In addition to a pizza party at the Holiday Inn, the group planned to spend time at Busch Gardens, enjoy a day cruise to Egmont Key and go snorkeling and dolphin watching.

After their stay in Madeira Beach, the Sunshine Kids will head to Orlando for two days.

The event is provided free for the children by the Sunshine Kids Foundation, a national, non-profit organization with headquarters in Houston, and dedicated to providing positive group activities for children diagnosed with cancer. The foundation also provides a medical staff to accompany the group.
