Graduation dates approved

BROOKSVILLE -- Hernando High School will make Saturday morning its graduation day for the second year in a row, but Springstead and Central will keep with their weeknight ceremonies.

Hernando High's graduation will be held at 10 a.m. May 26. Central's seniors will graduate at 7:30 p.m. May 30. Springstead will graduate at 8 p.m. May 31. The Adult Education student graduation will be 7 p.m. May 29.

The schedule was approved Tuesday by the School Board.

Hernando moved its 2000 graduation to Saturday morning at the request of students after a long history of weeknight commencements. It was so popular the school will try it again.

Springstead and Central, which hold their ceremonies outdoors due to the size of their graduating classes, set rain dates this year because of close calls with the weather over the past two years. Central's rain date is 10 a.m. May 31. Springstead's is 10 a.m. June 1.

Need for new cafeteria stressed

BROOKSVILLE -- Speaking on behalf of the school advisory council at Hernando High School, parent Ana Trinque couldn't have been more clear Tuesday night in stating her school's next building priority.

Trinque told the board that Hernando High needs a new, larger cafeteria, and people at the school would like to know when one might be forthcoming. The 40-year-old lunchroom, built for 170 students but now serving 1,400, is simply outdated, Trinque said.

Superintendent John Sanders said school officials are aware of Hernando's need. But he gave no firm promises on when a new one might be built other than saying that it's in the district's long range plan.

In the meantime, Hernando will get a new outdoor covered area with picnic tables, similar to one at Springstead, to offer students more places to sit during lunch.

The latest addition to Hernando's campus, a new 2-story classroom building, opened this year.
