Steve Spurrier Q&A

By Times staff writer

© St. Petersburg Times, published October 5, 2000

Q: What do you ask of your defensive coordinator?

SPURRIER: Just, hopefully, to stop the other guy, have our guys in position, have them playing hard and all that kind of stuff. I think I would ask our defensive coordinator about the same thing every head coach in America asks of his defensive coordinator. It's pretty simple -- do the best you can.

Q: Is defensive coordinator Jon Hoke receiving too much criticism?

SPURRIER: Yeah, I think he's catching too much because the scheme we've been coaching thus far is very similar to the scheme we coached last year.

Q: Did Saturday's game help young quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Brock Berlin gain some confidence?

SPURRIER: Certainly, for Rex and Brock to go in there and each of them throw a couple of touchdowns in the second half and complete a pretty good percentage, they threw the ball around very well. I was impressed with both of them. Hopefully it will give them confidence, but I think we learned both of those quarterbacks are very good passers who are capable of playing.

Q: When senior quarterback Jesse Palmer's sprained ankle heals, will he have to battle Grossman and Berlin to regain the starting job?

SPURRIER: I don't know about that. We'll worry about that when the situation comes. We'll see how Rex and Brock do. Every week we try to put the player out there that we think is best to help us win the game. Every week we try to go in with that pretense, and that's the way we do it.
