For the birds
The Florida Birding Festival and Nature Expo runs through Sunday at the Harborview Center, 300 Cleveland St., Clearwater, offering field trips, seminars, workshops, speakers and demonstrations. The topics include fly fishing, butterflies, nature photography, bats, owls and other birds of all kinds, including the pileated woodpecker, above. The festival coincides with the fall migration season. Registration is 1-7 p.m. today, 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Everyone who participates in a field trip or workshop or who attends a speech must pay a $10 registration fee, which allows access to workshops Friday and Saturday and to the nature expo. The expo is open 1-7:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission to the expo only is $5. The festival begins tonight with a 7:30 p.m. keynote speech by John W. Fitzpatrick, author of Birds Can Save the World. Field trips begin as early as 6 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All leave from the Harborview Center. Looking art in the eye
About 200 artists from around the country will gather for the 11th annual Old Hyde Park Village Art Festival, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Art prices range from about $20 to $30,000. Old Hyde Park Village is 2 miles west of downtown Tampa at Swann and Rome avenues, near Bayshore Boulevard. The event, which includes entertainment, is free.
