Sugar and venom

Former Blake Baby Juliana Hatfield is now 33, but she still has that sugar-coated little coo of a voice. Forget the pipsqueak vocals, because this girl knows how to rock. I saw her years ago at Club Detroit in St. Petersburg and she did a version of Leslie Gore's You Don't Own Me so venomous, it gave me goosebumps.

Hatfield has been whining about her boyfriends and her eating disorders and her sexuality -- in 1992 she told an interview she was still a virgin at 25 (scandal!) -- much longer than those Alanis and Fiona whippersnappers. But Hatfield kvetches with disarming naivete and grace.

Beautiful Creature and Total System Failure, Hatfield's latest simultaneously released discs, are getting lackluster reviews, but she has so many pop songs up her sleeve, the show is sure to be filled with her own gems and, hopefully, a Blake Babies tune or two.

Juliana Hatfield performs at 9 tonight at the Orpheum, 1902 Avenida de Republica de Cuba (14th Avenue), Ybor City, Tampa. Tickets are $9.99 in advance, $12 at the door. (813) 248-9500.

3 Doors Down at Jannus Landing

Mississippi boys 3 Doors Down bring their post-grunge anthems to Jannus Landing for two fun-filled nights this weekend.

Just a couple of years ago these guys were doing Bush and Stone Temple Pilot covers at seedy little bars near Biloxi. Now, with the help of monster hit Kryptonite off The Better Life, the band's debut, they're outshining their heroes.

So what if the sound is cliched? One thing sets 3 Doors Down apart from the other straight-ahead, ordinary rock bands and that's drummer Brad Arnold. See, he's also the lead singer. Kind of like Mickey Dolenz in the Monkees, only with less love beads, and stupider lyrics.

3 Doors Down performs with Nickelback and Dust For Life at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Jannus Landing, 220 First Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Tickets are $19.98. (727) 896-1244.
