With a month to go before the opening of BayWalk, Pinellas' answer to Centro Ybor, here are some changes elsewhere in downtown St. Petersburg:
* * *
Haiku, Redwoods' sushi bar, is now open for lunchtime fans of toro and yellowtail. Bento box and other specials from $7.95 to $9.50 (243 Central Ave.; 727-896-9118).
Asian Grille (277 Central Ave.; 502-0433) puts hip spin on food-court lunch buffet, from Szechuan beef to Panang chicken, and plans full-service dinner starting Friday. ... AG's Nang Crossno says owners (from Crabby Bill's, Fortunato's) plan to open Central Oyster Bar on the block in November.
Redwoods' founding chef, Joe Chouinard, is leaving to start his own place, Pacific Wave (211 Second St. S), opening next month, with cuisines from Asia and Australia to the Americas at lunch and dinner.
BERN'S RETURNS
The 400,000-bottle wine cellar at Bern's Steak House in Tampa is back on the honor roll of the Wine Spectator, after being booted last year for an out-of-date list.
I'LL HAVE ANOTHER
Fast-food makeover . . . New Millennial look at select Burger Kings is bright and modern as a Web site. Big windows, less orange, crisp lines radiate cleanliness; new internal design aims at speed. Reinventing fries, or the U.S. diet, will take longer.
