WEEKI WACHEE -- A 39-year-old Spring Hill man crashed into an ambulance Wednesday, totaling his new Mercedes and sending two emergency workers to the hospital.

The ambulance, responding to a medical call, was traveling east on Cortez Boulevard about 8 p.m. when the Mercedes, traveling north on U.S. 19, slammed into it. At the time, the ambulance's lights were flashing and its sirens wailing.

The Florida Highway Patrol identified the Mercedes driver as Anthony Girit of 4152 Glade Road in Spring Hill. He was cited for failure to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle.

His passenger, Michael Giordano of 8424 Suncoast Blvd. in Homosassa, was treated at Oak Hill Hospital and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Chief Danny Roberts of the Hernando County Fire Rescue said his two men, Charles Stringer and Sean Fahey, were also treated at the hospital for minor injuries. Another ambulance was quickly diverted to the original medical call.

The medical condition of the driver could not be confirmed Thursday.

4 weapons stolen in two burglaries

BROOKSVILLE -- Hernando County deputies are investigating two Tuesday burglaries during which four guns were stolen.

Police say they have no evidence that the burglaries are linked, but they are investigating that possibility.

Debra and Robert Shuster told deputies they returned from work at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday and discovered a window on their back porch was broken and opened.

The Shusters, 14023 Old Crystal River Road north of Brooksville, told deputies that two pistols, a shotgun and ammunition valued at $925 had been stolen. Their home had been ransacked, deputies said.

Several miles away, Julie Kelm arrived home at 21150 Yontz Road west of Brooksville and discovered her rear sliding glass door and screen were open.

She told deputies that she looked around her home and discovered a compact disc stand and about 40 country music discs were missing. She told deputies that a handgun and ammunition also were taken.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office asks that anyone with information call 754-6830.
