TAMPA -- Following a seventh-place showing among 241 runners at the Auburn Invitational, South Florida's Kristy Fuller was named Conference USA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

Fuller, who finished the 5,000-meter course in a career-best 17 minutes, 4 seconds, helped the Bulls to a seventh-place finish.

Fuller's showing was timely as the Bulls were without two of their top runners, Tiffany and Tara Quinn, who were inactive because of a family emergency. The next highest finish was by Cori Kill, who ran 17:38 to place 33rd.

Still, the Bulls managed a top 10 finish.

The USF men were led by Jim Vitale, who finished 44th in 25:44. Adam Chumbley finished 61st in 26:00.

USF's next meet is the Oct. 13 Pre-NCAA meet at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

MEN'S SOCCER: Despite being without two starters, the Bulls still managed to win a key Conference USA game last weekend at Louisville.

Matt Cavenaugh scored in the 56th minute as the Bulls won a tough match that featured 34 fouls. The 1-0 victory keeps the Bulls perfect on the season at 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Bulls are within striking distance of the school record of 10 wins to open a season. USF, ranked ninth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, hosts No. 8 Alabama-Birmingham today before traveling to East Carolina on Sunday and UNC-Greensboro on Oct. 12.

VOLLEYBALL: Junior outside hitter Michelle Collier had 17 kills and eight aces Tuesday as the Bulls defeated Alabama-Birmingham 3-0 (30-20, 30-16, 30-23).

Collier also tied a season best with eight aces as the Bulls improved to 9-4 on the season and 3-1 in C-USA. Kelly Mathiasmeier had 14 digs, Alessandra Domingos had 37 sets and Jolene Patton had 10 kills in the victory.

USF hosts Cincinnati today and No. 23 Louisville on Sunday. The Bulls are tied with the Bearcats for third place in the conference. The Cardinals have been in first place throughout the season.
