TAMPA -- After helping lead her team to the University of Tampa Invitational title with a second-place finish, Dee Dee Haefling earned Sunshine State Conference Female Cross Country Runner of the Week honors. Haefling became the second Spartan to receive the award as Tracy Buxton was runner of the week earlier this season.

With Buxton and Haefling taking the top two spots at the UT Invitational, the Spartans outdistanced second-place Florida Southern by four points (33-37), marking the first time since 1997 the Moccasins have lost to a conference opponent, a span of 31 meets. Buxton completed the 5,000-meter course at Flatwoods Park in 18 minutes, 30.37 seconds, followed by Haefling in 18:44.19. It's the first time this season the pair placed first and second.

Erin Wilson and Liz Bragg also placed in the top 10 for UT, finishing fifth (19:35) and seventh (19:48), respectively. Becky Ostroski posted a time of 22:26, good enough for 23rd. For the men, Doane Greenidge's fourth-place run of 27:46 helped the Spartans take second place behind Florida Southern. UT had four other runners place in the top 15. Eric Hall was eighth (28:09), Brant Speed was ninth (28:10), Nick Krause was 14th (28:35) and Josh Moore was 15th (28:37).

The UT teams will run at the Disney Invitational on Saturday and at the Florida Southern Invitational on Oct. 13.

VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore outside hitter Ania Ruiz is the Sunshine State Player of the Week after helping the Spartans go 3-0 last week, including a key conference win against eighth-ranked Barry.

In three matches, Ruiz had a team-high 19 kills, 15 digs, three aces and three blocks as UT defeated Barry 21-30, 30-19, 30-28, 30-25. For the week, she averaged 4.67 kills, 2.89 digs and a .311 attack percentage in nine games.

The Spartans, ranked sixth in the latest AVCA poll, are 13-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference after defeating Eckerd on Wednesday. The Spartans host Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) tonight.
