CAN WE NOT TALK? As part of the toning down of this year's rescheduled Emmys, E! canceled its acerbity-laced preshow fashion critique done by Joan Rivers and her daughter, Melissa.

This should be nothing more than a no-big-loss blip on the radar screen, but as many show business things like this do, it has become more.

Variety reports that Joan told an E! colleague she resigned from the all-entertainment cable channel because she was upset about how it handled the decision.

Variety says she told the colleague the move could send a message to the industry that the show is about nothing more than gushing over shoes and gowns. (There was no report on what else Joan thinks it is about. Oh, wait, her. Of course.)

E! VP John Rieber said Joan agreed with the decision and never said she was quitting. In an E! statement, Joan is quoted as saying, "Melissa and I felt it would be inappropriate to take our traditional places on the red carpet this year."

When Variety called Joan, she declined to comment.

FREEBIE UPDATE: Another toy in this year's Emmy gift basket is CardScan, which scans business cards and organizes the information into an electronic address book. CardScan synchronizes with OutlookR, Palm and digital mobile phones, and prints to paper organizers. Users can access contacts from any Web browser via CardScan.Net.

IT'S THE PRINCIPLE: The British theater industry is worried it will suffer the same postattack attendance problems as Broadway. But it's hard to get worked up about the West End's first postattack closing: a musical version of Peggy Sue Got Married. The latest in a string of movies unnecessarily reinvented as musicals -- this one based on the 1986 time-travel movie starring Kathleen Turner and Nicolas Cage -- is scheduled to end Oct. 13 after six weeks, Reuters says.

AUSTRALIAN FOR "BIG HIT": Among the 10 best Australian songs of the past 75 years, as chosen by 100 Australian writers, musicians, critics and broadcasters: Pub With No Beer by Slim Dusty. ("There's nothing so lonesome, so morbid or drear than to stand in a bar of a pub with no beer.")
