ST. PETERSBURG -- Harbordale plans a pair of events Saturday to honor community police officers and to break ground for a new Y-Achievers building. The neighborhood association had planned a luncheon commemorating detective and former community police Officer Holly Hadrika, who worked around Harbordale for 10 years. The World Trade Center attacks came the morning after that planning meeting.

"It takes on a special significance now," said president Theresa McEachern. "We need to show some appreciation for our police officers." The Y-Achievers group, which had been meeting at Trinity United Methodist Church, will get its own building, thanks to a community development block grant and private contributions. The project lacked sufficient funding, but a YMCA board member supplied $80,000 to make up the shortfall, McEachern said. The new building will stand on Fourth Street just north of 25th Avenue S. It will offer a gymnasium, computers and other activities for youth and seniors.

The luncheon honoring community police officers starts at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2401 Fifth St. S. From the luncheon, the group will walk to the site of the Y-Achievers building for a 2 p.m. groundbreaking ceremony.

The waiting is over for Wildwood residents, who now live near the city's largest recreation center. Saturday's grand opening of the Wildwood Recreation Center will run from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The 32,000-square-foot building at 1000 28th St. S replaces a smaller facility. It offers two full-length basketball courts in an air-conditioned gymnasium, a computer lab, a catering kitchen, plus lots of space for arts and crafts, games and other youth activities.

The Wildwood Neighborhood Association meets at the recreation center Thursday at 7 p.m.

Around the neighborhoods

Eagle Crest should have its neighborhood signs in place by next month. Like the streets between Fifth and Ninth avenues N, and between Tyrone Boulevard and 66th Street, the five monuments will have a red brick exterior. An eagle's profile will adorn the top. The association plans a landscaping party for November. A Neighborhood Partnership grant from the city funded the monuments.

Eden Isle Civic Association holds its annual meeting and Octoberfest at 5 p.m. Oct. 14 at the home of president Barry Marshall, 980 Eden Isle Drive NE.

North Kenwood's annual yard sale starts Saturday at 8 a.m. North Kenwood extends from Interstate 275 to 34th Street, between Ninth and 22nd avenues N. The association will have maps with participating homes available Saturday morning at Sylvia Boring Park at 13th Avenue N and 29th Street N.
