Contractor wins community award

Roy Deeb of St. Petersburg, a longtime contractor in the Tampa Bay area, won the Outstanding Contributions to the Betterment of the Community Award from the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday night.

Deeb, 72, was cited for his many years working with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and for Alpha, an organization that aids pregnant women.

Beverly Jackson with Arvida Realty Services in Clearwater received the Paul L. Getting Chamber Member of the Year Award. She works in business development and corporate relocation.

Also honored were state Sens. Jim Sebesta and Don Sullivan, University of South Florida president Judy Genshaft and St. Petersburg College president Carl Kuttler for their efforts to create greater access to a higher education in Pinellas County.

24-hour Wal-Mart supercenter coming

PINELLAS PARK -- After much waiting, south Pinellas shoppers are about to get their first Wal-Mart supercenter. The store at 7901 U.S. 19 N has scheduled its grand opening for 8 a.m. Oct. 24. The discount center, which will have a grocery store, bakery and auto-lube center in addition to its traditional retail items, will be open 24 hours a day.

Food donations welcome at chamber meeting

PINELLAS PARK -- The Pinellas Park/Mid-County Chamber of Commerce will meet at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday. The meeting at the City Auditorium, 7690 59th St. N, will give businesses a chance for networking. Attendees need to bring a jar or can of food for the needy. RSVP at 544-4777.

Bowl-a-Thon will be Nov. 3 at the Sunshine Bowl

PINELLAS PARK -- The Pinellas Park/Mid-County Chamber of Commerce will be holding a Bowl-a-Thon at 1 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Sunshine Bowl, 6900 U.S. 19 N. Registrations are due Oct. 25. For information, call the chamber at 544-4777.
