Classes to teach designing a creative photo album

A four-week Creative Memories class will teach students how to display photos in a specially designed album using techniques that are fun, creative and easy. Two classes are offered, both meet on Fridays starting Nov. 3.

One class meets from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and the second meets from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The registration fee is $40 and includes a photo album, sticker sheets and other supplies. Classes meet at the Recreation Building of Whispering Pines Park, Inverness. Call the park office at 726-3913.

Eight-week creative writing class to start Tuesday

INVERNESS -- The City of Inverness, Department of Parks and Recreation will offer a creative writing class for all level writers. This eight-week class will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Tuesday at the Recreation Building at Whispering Pines Park.

The instructor will be Jorge Sanchez of the Citrus Times. Beginners, poets, essayists, feature writers and novelists are invited to enroll. The suggested textbook is The Elements of Style, by Strunk and White. An advance registration fee of $30 is now being accepted at the Administration Office in Whispering Pines Park. Tuesday is deadline to register for Nov. 7 election

INVERNESS -- Citrus County Supervisor of Elections Susan Gill announced the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 7 General Election and the City of Crystal River Election is 5 p.m. Tuesday. Anyone who is not registered by that date will be unable to vote in this election.

In accordance with Chapter 97.055 F.S., the registration books must be closed on the 29th day before each election and must remain closed until after that election.

Voter registration and party changes will be accepted but only for subsequent elections.

People often fail to register to vote because they do not want to be called for jury duty. This law has been changed and jury lists are now selected from driver's license records.

Threatened kite topic of Audubon Oct. 16 meeting

CRYSTAL RIVER -- Ken Meyer, director of the Avian Research and Conservation Institute, will be the guest speaker at the Citrus County Audubon Society's Oct. 16 meeting.

Meyer will talk about the threatened swallow-tailed kite, which summers in Florida after spending much of the year in Central and South America. The 7 p.m. meeting will be at the Crystal River/St. Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve complex near U.S. 19 about a half-mile north of the Crystal River Mall. Turn west at the Day's Inn onto State Park Road and follow State Park Road/Sailboat Avenue all the way to the end.

Applications available for Miss Teen, Miss Citrus

INVERNESS -- The applications for the Miss Teen Citrus and the Miss Citrus County Scholarship Pageants as part of the 2001 Citrus County Fair are now available. Participants must be residents of Citrus County.

The Miss Teen Citrus pageant is open to girls ages 14-17 and up to a junior in high school. roung ladies ages 17 and a senior in high school through age 26 can compete in the Miss Citrus County Scholarship Pageant. The Citrus County Fair Association gave away $9,200 in scholarships during these pageants in 2000.

Applications are available at all county middle and high schools, Central Florida Community College, the Fair Office and all chambers of commerce. The deadline for returning applications is 5 p.m. Oct. 13. Orientation for those who have registered will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Citrus County Auditorium. For information, call 726-2993.

County seeks folks to teach a trade, skill or talent

CRYSTAL RIVER -- Citrus County Parks and Recreation is looking for certified instructors to teach lessons to youths and adults. The following instructor positions are available: guitar, tennis, arts/crafts, and baton. Citrus County Parks and Recreation also is seeking individuals that have a skill, trade, or talent that they would be willing to teach to others. Call the Citrus County Parks and Recreation Office at 795-2202 for information.

Senior fashion show postponed

The Ms. Florida Senior America Fashion Show and entertainment, which was scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blondie's Boutique in Inverness, has been canceled until further notice. For information, call Helen Hill Olesen at 746-9667.

Program giving away smoke detectors

Citrus County Department of Public Safety, Fire Prevention Section, and the fire departments will be distributing and installing free smoke detectors to qualified residents.

To qualify, the recipient must not have an operational smoke detector outside any bedroom or group of bedrooms. An area where a child or a physically disabled person sleeps without an operational detector also would qualify for a smoke detector.

During the installation, the recipient will receive information on the installation, testing and maintenance of the smoke detector.

The Citrus County Fire Prevention Section and the Crystal River Pilot Club make this program available. The state Fire Marshall's Office received the smoke detectors from the Tandy Corp. and gave them to the county. The Crystal River Pilot Club purchased the smoke detectors for the give-away program.
