TEENS ESCAPE FROM FACILITY: Three teenagers escaped from the maximum-risk Cypress Creek juvenile detention center after shimmying underneath a perimeter fence and running. Two of the teens were captured within an hour of the report of the escape; the third was found a bit later. Authorities are investigating how the teens, one of whom was being held on a sexual battery charge, got out of a secured detention center building. It was the first escape from Cypress Creek, which houses up to 100 of the state's most hardened juvenile criminals.

MANATEE PLANS: Big changes could be in store for the manatees that call the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park their home. In fact, within several years, the park may not house captive manatees at all. State and federal officials met this week and discussed possibly transferring the park's nine captive manatees to another facility for treatment of the papillomavirus, which has kept the herd quarantined for the past three years. They also discussed opening the gate that confines the captive herd, thus allowing wild manatees to use the spring run all the way up to the Fishbowl Observatory.

RUNOFF ELECTION HELD: Republican Millie King and Democrat Josh Wooten won their parties' respective runoff elections for the County Commission District 5 seat. They will face each other at the polls Nov. 7. Also winning a Democratic primary was Lee Cooper, who now will face Republican Janice Warren for the right to become Citrus County's next tax collector. Only 17 percent of the registered Republicans and Democrats participated in the election.

JUDICIAL CANDIDATES NAMED: The Judicial Nominating Commission recommended that the governor appoint Glen Abbott of Crystal River, Richard "Ric" Howard of Spring Hill or S. Ray Gill of Ocala to be Citrus County's next circuit judge. The post opened when Circuit Judge Michael Blackstone, under investigation for alleged violation of judicial ethics, announced he would resign effective Oct. 31. Bush has not yet appointed the new judge.
