DADE CITY -- The teacher got the upper hand on the pupil Tuesday when Pasco topped Weightman 19-14 in middle school football.

Pasco's Wendell Maples, who coached Weightman coach Johnnie Clower at Pasco High from 1985-87, notched his first victory over Weightman in four seasons as the Pirates' coach.

"It's the first time, so you've got to be kind of happy for him," said Clower, who is in his first year as Weightman's coach.

"It's a great rivalry, because what makes up a lot of (Weightman's) athletes is our kids from Dade City," Maples said.

Weightman's loss dropped the Wildcats from the unbeaten ranks and left them tied for third with Pasco at 3-1. Hudson (4-0) is atop the Pasco County Middle School Athletic Conference standings and Pine View (4-1) is second.

The Pirates racked up all their points in the first half behind quarterback Kyle Hobbs. Hobbs ran the ball into the end zone on a 35-yard bootleg, returned a punt 45 yards for another score and threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Trent Floyd.

Meanwhile, Nigel Bryant was the offensive weapon for Weightman. Bryant caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Anthony Rawson and connected with Joe Berenguer on a 55-yard halfback scoring pass. That marked the second straight game that Berenguer has caught a touchdown pass from Bryant.

In other games, Pine View defeated River Ridge 11-8 as Alex Gorgen scored on a 9-yard quarterback keeper and kicked a 27-yard field goal.

River Ridge's Sam Bell ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

BULLDOGS BOUNCE BACK: A week after Zephyrhills' first junior varsity loss -- 35-7 to first-year Mitchell, which is not fielding a varsity team -- the Bulldogs rebounded Thursday with a 24-17 win over rival Pasco.

"I think (our team) went into the Mitchell game frightened, (the Mustangs) being juniors and sophomores and us being mostly freshmen," Zephyrhills coach Matt McDermott said. "We knew Mitchell was going to be tough and we still have Land O'Lakes (Wednesday at 7 p.m.). They're always tough on the JV level."

The Bulldogs, who needed triple overtime to beat Pasco last year, improved to 4-1 while the Pirates dropped to 1-4.

Quarterback Kyle Briscoe had touchdown runs of 15 and 50 yards, and kicked a 34-yard field goal.

Zephyrhills' special teams also accounted for a score when Antonio Smiley blocked a punt, one of three blocks by the Bulldogs, and McDermott said a host of Zephyrhills players fell on the loose ball in the Pasco end zone.

McDermott also singled out linemen John Braxton and David Serf, along with middle linebacker and fullback Ben Hardy for solid two-way play.

Pasco did not get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter when Matt Prowant threw to Daniel Carter for a 75-yard touchdown. Prowant nearly had another score on a 60-yard pass play to Dante O'Neal that ended at Zephyrhills' 1-yard line. Carter carried the ball into the end zone on the next play.

Gabriel Montelongo capped the Pirates' scoring with a 36-yard field goal.
