ST. PETERSBURG -- Margaret E. "Cuddles" Dickins, a philanthropist and noted volunteer for numerous local charities, has died at 72.

Mrs. Dickins, a former director of the Boley Angels, the fundraising arm of Boley Centers for Behavioral Health Care, died Thursday (Oct. 5, 2000) at Edward White Hospital.

Named a princess in the 1989 Queen of Hearts Court to recognize her efforts on behalf of civic causes, she was a perennial major donor to the St. Petersburg Science Center. She served on the boards of directors of the Florida Orchestra and Florida Orchestra Guild, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Pinellas Association for Retarded Children.

A founder of the St. Petersburg Museum of History Guild, Mrs. Dickins supported the Stuart Society of the Museum of Fine Arts, Brookwood -- A Young Women's Residence and Cross of Lorraine. She was a familiar face at events organized to benefit St. Anthony's Hospital. Twice in recent years, she opened her home to the public for tours to benefit causes that included the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the St. Petersburg High Band Boosters.

Born in Lakeland, she attended Stevens University and came here in 1964. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, James E. Decker, Lakeland; four daughters, Margaret M. Decker, Laura R. Jenkins and Elizabeth Johnson, all of St. Petersburg, and Norma D. Hanley of Louisville, Ky.; and 13 grandchildren.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Homes & Cremation Tribute Center-Ninth Street Chapel, 2201 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. N. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Royal Palm Cemetery South.
