The Lightning last week apparently took a shot at acquiring Senators left wing Andre Roy in a trade for a mid round draft choice.

Lightning general manager Rick Dudley on Saturday would neither confirm nor deny the attempt, but word out of Ottawa was that the Senators wanted a defenseman as part of the deal.

Roy, 25, is a 6-foot-3, 210-pounder whom Dudley signed as a free agent in April 1999 when he was general manager of the Senators.

Dudley left Ottawa for the Lightning in June 1999.

Last season with Ottawa, Roy had four goals, three assists and 145 penalty minutes in 73 games. He was plus-3.

The season before, Roy was with Fort Wayne of the IHL and had 15 goals, six assists and 395 penalty minutes in 65 games.

The Boston Bruins selected Roy in the sixth round, 151st overall, of the 1994 draft.
