Daily fishing report

An angler can be judged by his or her tackle box.

Novice anglers seem to carry the largest boxes. They crowd them with lures and gadgets of all shapes, sizes and colors. They rely on what they've seen on television or read in magazines.

As an angler gains knowledge, the tackle box shrinks. Hook selection is limited to a few sizes. Lures are organized into a few shapes and colors that work. All the whiz-bang gadgets are gone. Much can be learned from looking into a guide's tackle box. They have paid attention to what produces and narrowed their selection. Everything is organized and streamlined, making rigging efficient. Smaller tackle boxes do not necessarily equate to larger fish, but they can be a sign the angler has removed the guesswork and is confident. Minimize the tackle and maximize productivity.
