Letters to the Editors

Letters of thanks

© St. Petersburg Times, published October 9, 2000

Editor: I am writing this letter to say thank you to the Harry Potter Lady at Books-A-Million in New Port Richey. Her name is Monica Starr and she is employed at Books-A-Million.

For the past nine weeks she has been running the Harry Potter Fan Club for kids at this store. She supplies the kids with projects and surprises, food items and fun, but most of all she has given these children encouragement and support.

I have watched shy children become comfortable and participatory under her guidance. She allowed any child no matter their reading level to sit in and do the activities. Mrs. Starr made all of them comfortable and happy. The discussions were lively and informative for everyone. Those of us adults who chose to stay around were always welcome too.

I realize that it may seem trite to some, but Mrs. Starr took her own time from her other duties and gave to these children a gift that very few do, her time. I was very disappointed to see this club come to an end, as were my two boys and the other children in the group. I did feel that a big thank you to Mrs. Starr was in order.
-- Rhonda Odajewski, Hudson

Editor: My friend and I were returning from a doctor's appointment when the car directly in front of us lost a tire. Lucky for all concerned, the tire flew off to the right, away from the traffic and landed in the grass.

We are grateful and believe someone "up there" loves us.
-- Peggy Holway, Port Richey

Editor: On Sept. 15 we returned to our home after being away for 31/2 days to find that our electric power was minimal. To the extent that our refrigerator/freezer had been without power for an unknown number of hours.

We called the emergency phone number for our service (Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative Inc.) since it was 6 p.m. and the emergency crew responded within the hour restoring our power by 8:30 p.m.

This letter is to thank them, publicly, for the quick response to our emergency.
-- Granville and Arlene Chapman, New Port Richey

Editor: Thanks to the New Port Richey restaurant owners and merchants and all of their patrons who participated in "Dine Downtown."

Because of their generosity, many of our low-income, older neighbors will not be forced to choose between eating nutritious meals or filling prescriptions for lifesaving medications. In addition, fewer of our community's neediest children will not go to bed hungry tonight.

A percentage of the proceeds from those dining at Boulevard Beef and Ale, the Crab Trap, Garden Cafe at Only the Best and Juan's Black Bean Deli was donated to the Pasco Food Bank. Allgood Variety, Davis Hardware and Karen's Gifts offered special incentives to customers who contributed canned goods at their shops.

This innovative event, which ran from Sept. 18 through Sept. 22, was sponsored by Greater New Port Richey Main Street Inc., Premier Beverage Co., Anderson Chiropractic Clinic and Maynard F. Taylor M.D.

On behalf of the Pasco Food Bank's 100+ member agencies that care for our less fortunate residents, thank you for your support.
-- Ken Buck, executive director, Pasco Food Bank
