School sponsors October book fair

Woodlawn Elementary will sponsor a Scholastic Book Fair throughout October at the school, 1600 16th St. N. More than 150 publishers of traditional children's favorites and new works will be on display from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Oct. 19 and Oct. 22-25.

The event is open to the public. Proceeds benefit school projects. For information, call Ginger Sheppey, 897-9380 or 893-1857.

High school schedules workshops for parents

Lakewood High has scheduled a two-part learning strategies workshop for parents at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 7 at the school, 1400 54th St. S. The two-hour sessions on Creating Independence through Student-Owned Strategies are open to parents of middle and high school students and will be presented in the media center.

A light supper will be served at 6 p.m. Call Cathy Naabe, 578-0109, or Emily Turek, 867-0211, by Oct. 23 to reserve a spot.

PTA organizes Fish Fry and Fun Fest

Madeira Beach Elementary's PTA will host its eighth annual Fish Fry and Fun Fest from 2 to 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the school, 749 Madeira Beach Causeway. Adult dinners are $5 and include fish or hot dog, cole slaw and baked beans. Children's dinners are $3.

The Fun Fest features entertainment, demonstrations, children's games and prizes. Entertainment packages, condo weekends and gift certificates will be auctioned beginning at 3:30.

Science Center offers preschooler programs

The Science Center of Pinellas County, 7701 22nd Ave. N, will host three programs as part of its Preschool Science interactive workshop program.

"The Body Human" and "The Five Senses" are scheduled for Thursday. "Warm-Blooded and Cold-Blooded Animals" will be presented Nov. 15, followed by "Sea Life" and "Rainbows" on Dec. 6. They are open to 2- to 4-year-olds. Cost is $6 for each adult-child team per class.

Mentors critically needed at two county schools

Pinellas County Schools Community Involvement Office has announced a critical need for volunteers at John Hopkins Middle School and St. Petersburg High School.

Mentors who can dedicate as little as one hour a week are needed at both schools to work with struggling students and serve as role models. For information, call 588-6405.
