Pasco County runners turn out with strong efforts at area events

Pasco County competitors dominated the field at last weekend's Flapjack 5K in Land O'Lakes. Fifteen Pasco men finished in the top 25 at the Oct. 7 event.

Lutz's Scott Habershaw, a former Land O'Lakes cross country standout, won the overall title with a time of 18 minutes, 2 seconds. Spring Hill's Robert Schatzman finished second overall in 18:16.

Lutz's Joey Donovan and Land O'Lakes Aaron Coy finished third and fifth respectively. Lutz's Dean Redfern, New Port Richey's Nelson Chasney, Lutz's Mike Davies and Daniel Bennett finished in the top 10 overall.

Coy, Redfern, Chasney, Zephyrhills' Mack Sheldon, Lutz's Brian Sarginger, Land O'Lakes' Nicoli Atkinson and Morgan Keppel each won their respective male age group titles.

Wesley Chapel's Kat Able was the top Pasco woman. Able finished 28th overall and second among women. She also won her age group.

Three other Pasco women finished in the top five. Lutz's Steph Harris, Land O'Lakes Charlene Weaver and Lutz's Rhonda DelCampo finished in the top five among women.

Able, Harris, Weaver, Land O'Lakes' Donna Menedez, Lutz's Val Gallo, Land O'Lakes' Brandy Coy, Katrina Spacone and Jessie Fenderson also won their respective age groups.

PASCO POWER AT WHARTON: Six Pasco men finished in the top 30 at the Sept. 29 Wharton Wildcat 5K in Tampa.

Schatzman, who finished second at the Flapjack 5K, was the top Pasco finisher. Schatzman finished sixth overall with a time of 19:04.

Port Richey's Brian Van Es also garnered a top 10 finish with eighth in 19:26.

Zephyrhills' Tony Shinn and Lutz's Dean Redfern finished in the top 20.

Lutz's Katie Horn was the top Pasco woman. Horn finished 45th overall and third in her age group.

Redfern, Zephyrhills' Mark Hamilton and Spring Hill's Stefanie Schatzman won their respective age groups.

Lutz's Sydney Olinger was the youngest runner. The 6-year-old finished ninth in the 14-and-under age group.

STETSON RUN: A trio of Pasco residents competed in the Stetson Law Run at Gulfport on Sept. 29. New Port Richey's Rusty and Melba Lee finished side-by-side. The couple finished 96th and 97th respectively.

Wesley Chapel's Colleen Davis also grabbed a top 10 finish in her age group.

UPCOMING GOLF EVENT: Town and Country in Dade City will host a benefit tournament for Hospice of Pasco on Oct. 27.
