FSU 23, FLORIDA 12: NOV. 21, 1998

Third of a series

After losing early in the season at North Carolina State, the No.5-ranked Seminoles knew they had to beat No.4 Florida if they had any hopes of reaching the inaugural Bowl Championship Series title game.

They also knew they would have to do it with Marcus Outzen at quarterback. Starter Chris Weinke sustained a season-ending neck injury two weeks before.

Outzen didn't do much in his first start, at Wake Forest, to suggest he could lead FSU to a win over Florida. But the Seminoles did have receiver Peter Warrick.

"Peter is just such a dangerous football player," FSU coach Bobby Bowden said. "You get the ball in his hands."

Any way you can.

Down 12-6 early in the third quarter, Outzen looked for Warrick on the left sideline but didn't see safety Marquand Manuel. The ball, however, went through Manuel's hands right to Warrick, who was backtracking to try and make a tackle. Warrick turned a sure turnover into a 32-yard touchdown.

Then early in the fourth quarter, Warrick was at it again. One play after his holding penalty nullified a long touchdown run, he threw a 46-yard touchdown to Ron Dugans.

Meanwhile, the FSU defense shut down the Gators, holding them to 204 yards.

"I had to touch the ball more than the two times I touched it against Wake Forest, and I touched the ball more than two times," Warrick said. "And the outcome showed it."
