Daily fishing report

Anglers in the Clearwater area can sample some fine fall fishing. Cooler weather has brought large quantities of redfish. Larger trout are making their presence known, and Spanish mackerel are roaming the inshore waters from Clearwater to Anclote Key.

Hopefully, the brisk east winds experienced early this week will keep the red tide offshore. Red tide has been seen from 7 to 20 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico.

Areas not affected by red tide are alive with Spanish mackerel and an occasional kingfish. If the fish are boiling the water, they are feeding on glass minnows. Small spoons are the recommended lure.

Don't be surprised if a bluefish ends up on your line. My charters have landed many this week. Rarely seen in large numbers on the Gulf coast, they average about 3 pounds.

Bottom fishing this time of year can be outstanding. The red tide has made targeting grouper more difficult. Some areas are void of the reef dwellers, but spots not affected can produce nice catches. Be prepared to move around a lot to find some fat fall grouper.
