Jaguars' Boselli to have surgery

JACKSONVILLE -- Unable to play any longer with a shoulder injury, Jaguars left tackle Tony Boselli opted for surgery that will sideline him indefinitely.

"It comes to a point where there's a difference between playing hurt and dealing with injury," Boselli said. "Certain injuries you play with as long as possible. But when it comes to the point where you're not helping yourself or the team, you have to look at other options."

Team doctors will perform arthroscopic surgery on Boselli's right shoulder Monday. Boselli said he had set no timetable for his return, although this is widely considered serious surgery with a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Coach Tom Coughlin said no decision has been made about Boselli going on injured reserve.

The Jaguars also got official notice that receiver R. Jay Soward will be out another six weeks for his second violation of the NFL substance abuse policy.

Soward, the team's first-round draft pick in 2000, missed the first four games for his first violation. He could have returned this week, but now won't be eligible to return until Nov. 26 -- if the Jaguars want him back at all.

Report: League expected to deal with Janikowski

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that it's likely the league will intervene as a result of Raiders and former Florida State kicker Sebastian Janikowski's most recent brush with the law.

According to a police report, Janikowski collapsed on the floor of the Sno-Drift Bar early Monday morning, cutting his face and requiring five stitches.

Janikowski, 23, was not arrested. A police report indicated the club's doorman told officers that Janikowski was "possibly overdosing on GHB" -- the so-called date-rape drug.

Janikowski ducked onto the Raiders' practice field, avoiding questions from reporters. Janikowski did practice, but did not make an appearance in the locker room.

Former receiver charged with robbery, theft

Former Vikings receiver Buster Rhymes faces charges in the carjacking of a 66-year-old woman.

Rhymes, the 39-year-old former Oklahoma star who played for the Vikings from 1985-87, turned himself in at the White Bear Lake (Minn.) police station Monday, attorney Richard Carlson said.

Officers took Rhymes to the Ramsey County Jail, and he was released on bail late Monday. He was charged with robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

BEARS: Fullback Daimon Shelton is appealing a positive drug test that could lead to a four-game suspension.

FALCONS: Quarterback Chris Chandler will start despite leaving last weekend's game with a mild concussion.

GIANTS: Running backs Tiki Barber (pulled hamstring) and Ron Dayne (sprained neck) missed practice, leaving Damon Washington as the probable starter Sunday against St. Louis.

LIONS: Charlie Batch, benched after the first game, was reinstated as the starting quarterback for Sunday's game in Minnesota.

PACKERS: After catching just one pass for six yards in the 14-10 loss at Tampa Bay Sunday, receiver Antonio Freeman said he was unhappy with his reduced role, comments that irritated coach Mike Sherman because they showed up in print rather than being voiced in his office. But quarterback Brett Favre says he's glad Freeman complained about being the invisible man in the offense.

PATRIOTS: Terry Glenn caught passes at his first practice in more than two months. Now coach Bill Belichick must decide whether Glenn can do the same in a game. Glenn is eligible to play Sunday against San Diego, but the team could use a one-week exemption and hold him back until Oct. 21 .
